Matt’s work, which comprises primarily lithography, screenprinting and photography, explores the relationship between two colliding forces, and the constant balance that occurs between them; how in all aspects of existence, order is defined in terms of a stability of opposite energies. His work emphasises how these forces harmonise, and how they conflict with one another. He visualises this by creating collage like images with subjects combining found objects and architectural structures that have been damaged by time, along with typography, flags and coloured smoke. These elements are often then combined with images from nature, such as wildlife and coastal scenery.
He graduated with a degree in Fine Art, from the University of Dundee, where he specialised in printmaking. During his degree, he was selected for the 2014 RSA New Contemporaries Exhibition, where he was awarded the Walter Scott Global Investment Award and the Art in Healthcare Purchase Prize. He has also exhibited in a number of galleries across the UK, including the Hatton Gallery (Newcastle) and The fleming Collection (London). He is currently based in Edinburgh, where he continues to create new work.
